How did you get there? Your main character has been feared it or been affected by it. But when they get interrupted by the weird kid at school, they have to set some ground rules for its use. Write about how your character teaches children magic. Whether you use the bite-sized stories you write as exercises, standalone pieces, or segments of a larger work, the condensed length is beneficial. Oh…and they have a one-year-old to take care of on top of it. What they find is beyond anything they imagined. The only problem? All that Glitters: Write about a shiny object. They do some digging and discover the source…a small child with rags for clothes and hollow cheeks. They leave no trace.

Picnic: Write about going on a picnic. Admiration: Is there someone you admire? Real writers know that you can easily come up with bits and fragments of a story but the overarching plot can be tricky to drum up. Write about how society has collapsed over hundreds of years, not with war or a single event like they always thought would happen.

Randomly point to a place on a map or globe. Recipe: Write about a recipe for something abstract, such as a feeling. It fits with the sci-fi world and further creates a sense of realism and it pulls the reader deeper into the world.
